The Best and Latest in Medical Imaging Diagnostics
At Akola PET CT & Nuclear Scan Center, we are dedicated to provide high-quality medical imaging diagnostic services to our patients with cutting edge technology.
PET means positron emission tomography. PET scan looks for biochemical or metabolic activities in our body. In this test a safe radioactive chemical called radiotracer is injected into the vein. The PET scanner detects diseased cells in body.
No, these techniques are different. CT scan produces still images of the body organs using X rays. MRI also produces still images with magnets and radio waves. On the contrary PET scan informs us about functioning of the organ in real time. Most of the times PET scan and CT scan are performed at the same time. This is called PET-CT. This helps us in more accurate diagnosis. PET-CT can detect changes months before these are apparent on CT scan.
Cancers: almost all types of cancers. In cancers PET scan is used for
1. primary diagnosis
2. to know the spread of the cancer
3. to assess the effectiveness of treatment
4. in follow up after treatment to know if cancer has returned
Heart attack
1. to know effect of heart attack on heart
2. functioning of heart muscle
Brain diseases
1. Brain tumours
2. Dementia
3. Epilepsy
4. Alzheimer’s disease
No. PET scan is an outpatient procedure. Usually, you are allowed to go home the same day. Sometimes you may be admitted in treating doctor’s hospital for preparation.
1. Please bring the referral letter from your doctor.
2. It is necessary to take appointment for the PET scan.
3. It is necessary to come with at least one responsible relative.
4. Usually it takes 5-6 hours before you leave the PET CT centre. So, plan accordingly
5. Please bring all your old medical files, CT scan films, CDs, MRI scan, sonography etc.
6. Please bring the list of current medicines you are taking
7. Please inform if you have any allergies, asthma
8. You should not be eating anything for six hours before test. Your doctor may change this instruction if you have diabetes.

1. PET Radiotracer is injected in a vein.
2. You are expected to sit in chair or lie down on a bed. Too much activity after injection is not allowed as it will send the tracer to the areas that is not being tested.
3. CT contrast is also injected if PET-CT is planned.
4. You will lie on the table which goes in and out of the scanner machine
5. It usually takes around 30-60 minutes for the actual scan process
6. During the scan process please remain still and do not move. Movement can cause blurring of images.
While PET scans involve a small amount of radiation exposure and PET-CT would involve additional radiation exposure, the risks are generally considered minimal compared to the potential benefits of the procedure. Please talk to your doctor for any further queries.
Dr Hemant did his MBBS from IGGMC, Nagpur and after that he did his MD in Nuclear medicine from the prestigious Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. In addition, he has had the first-hand experience in this field at the SPECT Lab Pune.
He has got vast experience in PET CT and SPECT CT imaging and reporting for oncology and non-oncology cases during his training at the Tata memorial hospital, Mumbai. In addition, he pursued additional expertise in Radioiodine therapy (Low dose and High dose) and Radionuclide therapy with Lutetium-177 labelled isotopes for Neuro-endocrine tumours (NET) and Prostate Cancer during his residency in Tata memorial hospital, Mumbai.
All this acquaintance with Nuclear Medicine helps him in applying the principle of Theragnostic for better treatment of rare tumours like NET, and moreover designing studies with therapeutic radionuclides.
